Steven A. Smith is visiting assistant professor of journalism at the University of Idaho where he teaches media ethics, management and economics, writing and a freshman survey course titled Media and Society.
Before turning to teaching, Smith was a 38-year news professional, working mostly in newspapers. He was editor of The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, WA, from 2002 to 2008, resigning during a period of deep staff cuts. Previously, he was editor of newspapers in Salem, OR, and Colorado Springs, CO. He was assistant to the vice presidents/news at Knight-Ridder Newspapers and earlier in his career worked at newspapers in Wichita, KS, Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, and Eugene, OR.
He has lectured on civic journalism, journalism values, ethics and transparency in the U.S. and Europe. Projects he has supervised have twice earned the Payne Award for Media Ethics.
He holds a B.S. degree in journalism from the University of Oregon and an M.A. in communications from The Ohio State University.
