Sometimes I teach in college (law, creative writing) http://oceanshighschool.com Ray Cates was born in Greenevlle Tennessee in 1940. He moved to Florida when he was a junior in high school and graduated from H.S. in Ocala, Florida. He joined the U.S. Navy while still in high school and then went to college for a year before he served in the active navy. In 1961 he served on the largest destroyer that was at the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. It was the USS Vesole. In 1961 he married, and in 1964 he graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Degree. He bagan teaching at Gainesville High, then Highlands Elementary, and after that Osceola Junior High. He taught for five years at Fort King Junior High where he was a department head, and scoutmaster of Troop 115. He then taught at Ocala High School which changed it's name while he was there to Forest High. He taught then at Leesburg High, Marion Academy, Central Florida Community College and then Leesburg High agaom. He went back to the University of Florida where he taught Children's Literature as a graduate student. He also attended Stetson University and Liberty University over a period of years. His graduate major was counseling. He taught at the Koala Center for five years. There he was a teacher, school principal, community lecturer, and drug counselor. He passed the CAP test while at that institution. In 1983 he founded Oceans High School, to help people earn a high school diploma who home school, or dropped out of school without a high school diploma. He runs that school today. He has always written fiction and non-fiction.
