K. Marie

On the edge between the protective bubble we call "College" and the real world.

My name is Kayla and this is my blog.

Marie is my middle name, and I don't get to use it very often which is a shame because I really like it, so it's my public name for this blog.

I am a junior at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa majoring in Theater with an dual emphasis in Performance and Artistic Administration.

I grew up in Colorado Springs, CO and people told me I was crazy for going to school in "Ohio, Idaho, or . . ." wherever they thought Iowa was. But I love it there almost as much I love Colorado.
I was actually born in New York City and plan on moving out there once I graduate next year.

Oh my goodness I graduate next year!!!

My last three summers have been pretty interesting:

In 2008 I worked as a Pantry Cook for the Five-Star, Five-Diamond Hotel and Resort called the Broadmoor Hotel. You've most-likely heard of it if you live in the Rocky Mountain Region. Well it's the oldest (90 years) Hotel and Resort with those ratings on the North American Continent. The thing that made this an exciting job—I had no experience cooking, apart from making scrambled eggs, cookies, Ramen noodles and chicken quesadillas in my own kitchen. Miraculously, I made it through the summer (all ten fingers intact) and eventually ran one of the kitchens on my own towards the last month of my time there.

In 2009 I had a summer Internship in Iowa City at an Equity Shakespeare Festival through Riverside Theater. My debut on the professional, outdoor stage!

Last summer (2010), I spent five weeks in CO as a part-time nanny for three boys all under the age of three. Then it was off to Washington D.C. to work at 1st Stage Theatre in Tyson's Corner, VA. Name any job in the theater and I probably did it during those six weeks. I also lost about five pounds, not from jogging around the National Monuments on Capitol Hill, but from losing about a pint of sweat each day in the record high temperatures and humidity on my 3-minute walk to the Metro.

My next adventure? Europe. Hence this blog.

I am studying abroad for 8 weeks in London and 8 weeks in Florence through the ACM Arts in Context Program.

I leave January 28 and fly home June 7 of 2011.

That's 130 days abroad. My goal is to blog every day—whether it's one sentence or four pages.

So here it goes. Enjoy!
