The origin of the word can most clearly be traced back to the late eighteenth-century philosophical writings on the sublime (sublīmis in Latin) a term which, in its most simple form, means to be so Overcome by the Inconceivable Greatness to the Point of Horror.  The Inconceivable Greatness can refer to the physical, moral, intellectual, metaphysical, aesthetic, spiritual or artistic.  The idea of the sublime was discussed by luminaries such as Anthony Ashley-Cooper, John Dennis, Joseph Addison, Mark Akenside, and Edward Young (although Edmund Burke who developed his idea on the sublime in A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful and Immanuel Kant usually get most of the credit).

Where the lovelyhorrible defers from the sublime in that a lovelyhorrible need not be Inconceivable Great, and, in fact, can even be Inconceivably Small.
