As a school kid I could not memorize dates and battles, but my freshmen college professor turned me on to history when she said Puritan families used bundling boards on cold winter nights when a young man came courting. The couple crawled into bed together to keep warm. Quickly I imagine, the parents placed a bundling board down the center of the bed. I don't believe it worked either, but that tidbit of information made those people in history real to me for the first time.
“Myra’s Musings” includes a mix of columns I wrote while practicing parenthood. I never did get the hang of it. Since my columns are mostly lies, I plan to include tales of real people that I discovered while writing Historical Markers posted along Texas roadways. Yes, real people write the words you see on those highway markers.
As a traveler’s storyteller, I toured the state doing research for four guidebooks that tell, not just the tales of Texas’ most famous and infamous historic sites, but also the saga of pirates, profiteers, philanthropists, and preservationists that colored the state with a broad and wild brush.
From time to time I may comment on the progress of my second novel, which is set in Indianola, a major Texas seaport that rivaled Galveston until the 1886 hurricane left behind a ghost town.
My first novel, Legacy, is a 1945 coming of age story. Not my coming of age. It's fiction.
