Nathan Cole is an enrolled member of the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation (formerly known as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation), located in northern New York State. The reservation is adjacent to the Akwesasne Reserve in Ontario and Quebec. The Mohawk consider the entire community to be one unit. The Mohawk are part of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, and in that capacity were the “Keepers of the Eastern Door” and one of the Confederacy’s Elder Brothers sitting in councils.
Academically, Nathan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English from San Diego State University, and a Master’s Degree in English from Brigham Young University.
Professionally, he is a tenured Assistant Professor of English at Salt Lake Community College and has taught there full-time since 1994. In addition to his typical duties as a writing instructor for the required first and second year composition courses, his favorite course to teach is the College’s English 2810: Native American Literature and Experience. The class is a introductory course to Native American history, literatures and experiences (e.g., field trips to Pow-wows and other Native events and venues) intended to enrich students’ knowledge of Native American experiences and issues of today.
