These include: THE BRAVEST OF THE BRAVE (Knopf) which is an IRA/CBC Children’s Choices winner. THUNDER-BOOMER! (Clarion, 2009) which was named an SLJ "Best Book," as well as an ALA and Smithsonian Magazine "Notable Book." And MINE! (Alfred A. Knopf, 2011) has been named an SLJ "Best Book," and has garnered four starred reviews, and was listed by the NY Times as a best board book of the year. Many of my titles have appeared on the Bank Street College’s "Best Children’s Books of the Year" lists, or have been short-listed for various state awards. I also write poetry for adults, and articles for professional journals. 

I received the Michigan Library Assoc.'s "Award of Merit" as Michigan's youth librarian of the year in 2002. In 2005 I was invited to read at the White House Easter Egg Roll, and in 2010 I spent a month presenting at American schools on U.S. military bases in Japan.

I lead workshops and speak at state and national conferences, in addition to doing author visits at schools, libraries, and at bookstores. I am an active member of SCBWI (The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators).
