I, Ronald G. Shapiro, am, by training, a PhD in psychology with a specialization in designing products, solutions, and services so that they will be easy for people to use. Currently I am an independent consultant and speaker/presenter in Human Factors, Ergonomics, User Experience, Learning, Leadership and Human Resources.
I have worked as a human factors professional, manager, and corporate coordinator at IBM. My competency in this area is recognized by my Certification as a Human Factors Professional (CHFP) by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics.
My substantial and unique contributions to the field have been recognized by my title as a Fellow in the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES). I was the first chair of the now highly successful National Ergonomics Month (NEM). My performance in founding NEM was recognized with the Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award from HFES. I've also served in a variety of offices including Secretary-Treasurer of HFES and President of the APA Division of Applied Experimental and Engineering Psychology.
I am also an outstanding educator and leader of educators. My IBM positions have included managing technical learning and new employee orientation world wide. I have also managed IBM's external employee education program in the United States and career coaching in North Carolina. Two of my learning programs, one of which I managed (new employee orientation) and one of which I designed (Blue Opportunities) have won major awards from professional organizations (ASTD Excellence in Practice Award and SHRM Innovative Business Solution Award) recently.
I have presented for a number of professional societies including HFES, APA, Eastern Psychological Association (EPA), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), American Indian Scientific and Engineering Society (AISES), Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Documentation and Training (DocTrain) and Medical Product Safety network (MEDSUN). I also present to businesses, colleges, universities, and schools on Careers, Learning, Leadership, and Human Factors/Ergonomics. My presentations are educational, informative, interactive, and fun. My participant comments and ratings are excellent.
My other professional affiliations include Sigma Xi (Scientific Honorary Life Member), Phi Kappa Phi (Academic Honorary Life Member), Society of Industrial Psychologists (SIOP) and AISES (Sequoyah Fellow).
I am listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering. I received my B.A. from the University of Rochester and my M.A. and Ph.D. from Ohio State in Experimental Psychology. I have taught at Ohio State, Denison University, University of Connecticut and Dutchess Community College.
