Santa Cruz, California
A third generation Californian, Kirk McNeill was born in Berkeley, California in 1954. He spent his childhood in the East Bay Hills. In his teens,during summer vacations on the Mendocino coast, he discovered the underwater realm through diving. After high school in San Francisco in the late 60’s, he attended Contra Costa College as an art major. During six years in the Naval Reserve he moved permanently to Santa Cruz.
In 1981, while attending Cabrillo College, he discovered blacksmithing. In 1990 he was accepted to the International Teaching Center for Metal Design in Aachen, Germany. On his return he founded Freedom Forge, and has since been producing fine metalwork for residences from Oregon to San Diego to Maui. Recently, Kirk has again turned his attention to sculpture, back to his love for the ocean and it’s abundant life.
