Writer & Poet ~ Nature Lover & Photographer
Ozark Poet, Joanie Roberts
I am a beginning author, writer, and poet exploring the worlds of poetry, nature, and photography. I love to capture ordinary moments and reflect upon our natural world and its intersections with our ordinary daily life.
My professional life’s work has been in the field of education as a science public-school teacher, elementary school principal, college adjunct education professor, and state education consultant. I continue to work on social issues such as poverty and its impact on children and education.
I am a beginning poet! I live in the beautiful Ozark Mountains on Lake Ann in Bella Vista, AR. This natural setting has inspired my writing, as well as, helping my overall personal health.
After moving back to Arkansas, my older sister, Katy, and my brother, Mickey, passed away just six months apart. Thus began the most difficult time in my life and it has become a personal journey back to finding joy each and every day.
Through social media such as Twitter and Facebook, I met poets from all over the world! By discovering and writing poetry, it truly opened a new chapter in my life, and has shown me once again, that beauty is always with us each and every single day --- if we just take time to see what is ordinarily invisible!
In 2006, I co-founded the Shadowleaves Company and started my blog, Shadowleaves On Lake Ann. Also, I completed a Writer’s Residency at the Eureka Springs Writer’s Colony in 2014. And in 2015, I started a local writer’s group in Bella Vista: Village Lake Writers & Poets, sponsored by The Artist Retreat Center and Bella Vista Public Library. Our mission is to share the joy of writing, to improve our craft, to share the importance of good writing, and wonderful storytelling in all forms.
I continue to write poetry and hope to publish my first volume of poems. I also write Poetry On Demand on my manual typewriter and have performed at Bella Vista’s Farmers Market, Bentonville’s First Fridays, and Eureka Springs’ White Street Art Walk for the Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow. I was selected as Bella Vista, AR's Artist of the Month, May 2019. I am a member of Ozark Writers League, Ozark Writers Forum, Ozark Writers Inc., Poets Northwest Roundtable, and Village Lake Writers & Poets.
I’m blessed with a wonderful husband, Leroy Roberts, along with our son’s and daughter’s families too. We cherish our two new Cocker Spaniel Christmas Pups, Sweetie Pie and Ginger Bread, who helps keep us feeling young!
